I have a personal stake in the Italian Coronavirus Theater. Theatre may be a better spelling given its European origins! Be that as it may, there is a lot of drama in Italian medical circles as a rather genius prediction of the Coronavirus Weakening may be true.
Lot’s of admiration for Professor Matteo Basetti, chief of infectious diseases at San Martino General Hospital in Genoa, Italy, for sticking to his guns. He now describes the virus as a wild cat as opposed to an aggressive tiger.
He says from his observations that patients are now surviving the virus whereas before they would have succumbed.
Professor Bassetti, told The Sunday Telegraph the virus could wither away on its own.
And if the virus’s weakening is true, Covid-19 could even disappear without the need for a vaccine by becoming so weak it dies out on its own, he claimed.

Professor Matteo Bassetti said he is convinced the virus is ‘changing in severity’ and patients are now surviving infections that would have killed them before.
He has said multiple times in recent months that patients with Covid-19 seem to be faring much better than they were at the start of the epidemic in Italy.
He suggests this could be because of a genetic mutation in the virus making it less lethal, or because of improved treatments, or because people are not getting infected with such large doses because of social distancing.
But other scientists have struck back at the claims. Saying there is no scientific evidence that the virus has changed at all. However, the Professor has other scientific support and in his country!
It has been noted that when looking at severity, it is theorized that the Coronavirus weakening may be the trend.
He has observed that even elderly patients, aged 80 or 90, are now sitting up in bed and they are breathing without help. The same patients would have died in two or three days before.’

Professor Bassetti suggests that one of the reasons the virus might be causing less serious illness is a genetic mutation which has made it less damaging to people’s lungs.
The professor postulated also that people may simply be receiving smaller amounts when they get infected, because of social distancing and lockdown rules, making them less sick.
I personally can understand the evolutionary concept of a virus NOT immediately killing the host. If the virus is too effective it has lost it’s evolutionary and survival edge. The objective is propagation and this may be a revealing characteristic. Let us hope! But if less sick they are…then that surely is good. Have an open mind bureaucrats of Italy!
